Homemade Dinnerware for you

In today’s kitchen stores, expensive designer dinnerware seems to be all the rage. There are many different styles to choose from. You could choose to buy a set of plates that have intricately painted flowers. Instead of buying a set of traditional round plates, you can purchase plates that are square in shape. The prices of your options range from modest to unaffordable for most of us. But if you really want a one-of-a-kind set of dinnerware, there is one more option: create your own.
Not only will creating your own set of dishes be something unique and enjoyable to make, it will most likely be less expensive as well. Although molding your own dishes might take more time and effort, the reward of sitting down to use your handmade dinnerware time and time again will be well worth it. Your homemade dinnerware will not only be a set of dishes, it will also be a work of art in itself. So now is the time to start thinking about making some of your own clay art plates. Start by drawing with a pen and paper a few of the ideas that you have for your dinnerware. Once you have your design picked out, simply begin molding the shape that you want to use out of your clay. After you have molded your plates as you want, make sure to let the clay dry thoroughly. Next, paint the pattern that you have drawn on your paper, onto the dry piece of clay. Firing the piece of clay is the last and final step to complete your piece of dinnerware. Keep doing this until you have finished your entire set of dinnerware. Make sure that you do not use over glazes on your dinnerware unless you are sure that it has been tested for lead content.
What you ultimately decide to create for your dinnerware set is completely up to you and your personal sense of style. If you are a coffee drinker, or host a lot of gatherings where coffee is served, molding a larger amount of coffee cups is a good idea. If you want to have a traditional set of dinnerware, you can start by making a set of plates, salad plates, soup bowls, and your coffee mugs. If you are feeling up to the task, you can also create many different accessories for you set. For instance, you could make charger plates, an oval platter or even a gravy boat. If you wanted to make a square platter, you could always start with a bisque ceramic tile to get you going.
Whatever pieces you decide to add to your collection, be sure to invite over all of your friends and family and show them off. They will all be impressed, and maybe even jealous, by your unique dinnerware masterpieces. Your dinnerware will be handed down for generations to come.
